Sri-Lanka named as the most important destination – 2013-169

Sri-Lanka important in 2013

Sri-Lanka, sometimes known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean because of its natural beauty, has, according to the The Sri-Lanka Broadcasting Corporation been named by British Airways as the most important destination in 2013. It cites “Beautiful beaches, heritage sites, hospitality and no restrictions on travel are the reasons for this nomination.” Another reason for the decision is the varying climates of Sri-Lanka.  Tourism has grown from £650,000 in 2010 to 1 million by the end of 2012.

Sri-Lanka is one of the most bio-diverse places on earth and for its size has a large number of wildlife reserves. It also has varied environments from flat coastal planes and mountains located in the South of the island.

In the later decades of the 20th century and up to 2009 an ethnic based civil conflict has marred the countries history with allegations of human rights abuses. However the conflict appears to have ended decisively and tourism is now very much on the increase.
